Respite Care

RappRespite is now in action…

The telephone lines are open and operators are standing by to take your call.

Yes, RappRespite is in business. RappRespite (which is described elsewhere in The Gazette, here) is an informal group of neighbors around the county.  It has been formed around the simple idea of neighbors helping each other.  That is, one or two persons giving a break to someone who is a caregiver, someone who is in the home day and night tending to someone who, for the most part, cannot be left alone.   This leaves the caregiver needing a break now and then, perhaps for an hour or two  — or maybe more.

So RappRespite was formed by Denise Chandler, who tends her husband Don day and night.  She was helped in organizing by Hal Hunter, who set out to get a telephone number from a large and powerful company.  This was supposed to be easy.  One would think so.  But it turned out to be a nightmare.  Yea, verily.

Hal spoke with at least eighteen different people at this big company.  People who said they were in Massachusetts; a man who said he was in Scranton; a woman named Gretchen who was in sales and billing who added up $134.08 in charges, but still here was no dial tone on the line.

Hal kept on calling.  Most agents who said they would call him back never did.

He even spoke with someone named William who spoke so softly Hal could not understand him.

This all started in mid-August and by the close of September Hal still had no dial tone but did have a small pile of bills for a phone line that did not work.  He called the Virginia Corporation Commission which apparently prompted a call from Doug at this large telephone company.

Finally, in mid-October, after two months of this nightmare, Hal was able to announce that one may call 540 937 9951 and it will indeed ring.  Hal might answer.

Or, one might hear a recording and leave a message.  This has already worked, says Hal.

So here we are.  Need a break from caring for someone?  Just call.  Please give a few days or even a week advance notice.  You can go shopping.  Have a meal out.  Go to a movie, or just take a walk.

We are RappRespite.  We are not housekeepers.  We do not give medications.

We are not dog walkers.

But, thanks to Hal’s patience and determination, we do have 540 937 9951 and you can give us a call.
